Operation 99 is a game targeted toward students who need improvement on their basic algebra skills. It also can be a fun game for everyone to enjoy and test their mental math skills!
I came up with Operation 99 from a small project that I had to create in class using Visual Basic. The assignment was to create a “number bonds” game where the user would be shown two numbers of an addition problem, and would have to guess the missing operand. (For instance, 5 + _ = 7. Answer: 2) I wanted to create a different approach to that and let the user choose any 2 numbers that sum up to a given total.
The game is fun, challenging, and addictive! It sort of teases you, makes it seem like you forgot how to do basic math. Haha!
In Operation 99, random totals will appear endlessly as well as a grid of random numbers between 1 and 15 inclusive. An operation will also be highlighted. Tap the number tiles to add or subtract their values respectively, in the order that you select them. Try to survive 99 seconds while allowed only 10 seconds to complete each problem. If you get 3 problems incorrect, you lose. If you fail to complete a problem in 10 seconds or less, you lose. I incorporated a point-based store for users to purchase hints and other items to help win the game. Also, I thought it would be interesting to try problems with three operands adding to a total instead of just two. The game is fun, challenging, and addictive! It sort of teases you, makes it seem like you forgot how to do basic math. Haha!
I started Operation 99 early April 2014 and built a finalized, polished version for Android mid July 2014. I used Corona SDK – a 2D development platform that compiles LUA – to create the app. I appreciate the ease-of-use and efficiency that LUA provides! I did struggle some with all the Corona API updates and changes, but the forums and community answered many questions that I had. I think the best part of using Corona to create my app was seeing the rough ideas in my sketchbook come to life in a short matter of time! Overall, I enjoyed the whole app-development process of brainstorming, debugging, testing, polishing – everything!
Operation 99 by FXF Studios is now available in Google Play for free. I am currently working on optimizing the app for iOS devices. It should be available on the App Store soon! Be sure to click the link below and like FXF Studios on Facebook!
