Teddy Terror is a 2D horror survival adventure with creepy smiling monsters and tongues coming out of eyeballs and where using your environment is crucial for survival.
Teddy Terror is a 2D horror survival adventure(with puzzle elements) about a Little boy and his Teddybear who are trapped in a Nightmare.
Unique about the game is that the player is a little boy with limited strenght and he has to use his environment wisely in order to eliminate the monsters.
There is a passive aggresive approach to clear every level. Whether it’s luring monsters into traps or finding weapons with limited ammo to keep enemies at a distance.
Teddy Terror started out as a game for the Game Jam IndiesvsPewDiePie on 21 November 2014. In the game you play a little boy with a teddybear. You start out by waking up in a dark small world, where your visibility isn’t high. The little boy has to find a way to escape his nightmare, but in order to do that he has to eliminate all the creatures, monsters and ghosts that haunt the area. But how will the little boy survive without having any physical strenght and only 3 hearts? Luckily there are deadly traps scattered over the area and by luring the monsters to them he can eliminate them. But those traps are also painful to step on yourself! There’s also a toy gun that the boy used to play with that appears in his nightmare, with only 3 bullets it can come in handy or necessary at some moments!
Who are we?
Rage Monster Games is a relatively new Indie game developing company managed by Gianni Bakkes, student at the HKU in the Netherlands.
Together with Runic Sounds(audio design students) we created Teddy Terror during the 72 hr Gamejam(hosted on Gamejolt). We wanted to create a passive-aggressive horror survival pixel art game, where the player is very vulnerable most of the time. By evading deadly traps and luring monsters towards them, the player can use his environment to his advantage.
Teddy Terror started out as an entry to the gamejam IndiesvsPewDiePie( 21 Nov. 2014). Motivated by the gamejam Gianni Bakkes had an idea of a roguelike horror survival game, where the player would have to fail in order to progress. The player would have to start with as little as possible and needs to use the environment within the game in order to defeat monsters and finish the level. After the player would finish one level, he would be presented a gift that will give him an upgrade that he can use in the next levels. When the player dies, he keeps the upgrades making him able to challenge te levels much easier the next time he plays.
This in mind, Gianni started to ask the sound designers at RunicSounds to collaborate with him in the gamejam. The two sound designers Nick van Kleef and Ruben Bergshoeff were eager to work on the gamejam. The gamejam indiesvsPewDiePie started at 21 November and ended at 23 November( 72 hr gamejam). During that time Gianni started with an idea of a little boy who fell asleep and was taken away to a world of nightmare. After that, he started by creating visuals for the game and setting up a basic gameplay layout( the player could move, and monsters would chase him) The setting had to be creepy and the contrast between the world of the little boy and the nightmare to be very noticeable. Therefore he came up with ideas inspired by japanese horrors, like eyeballs with shadow arms. “The game MUST have ‘gore’ in it, just to spicen up the contrast between the little boy and his nightmare” claimed Gianni. Nuclear Throne formed a solid inspiration for the character and in that way a shooter element was added to the gameplay. With a workflow of switching between creating visuals, coding and skyping with RunicSounds for the audio Teddy Terror came to life and we uploaded the game a half hour before the deadline. However we didn’t manage to add the roguelike(like random level generation) and upgrade system in the Gamejam build, as we had little time left for the further development. But we are planning to improve Teddy Terror and will implement this system in the future of the game.
